Malaysian Minister, Zainuddin Maidin during his interview on Bersih 2.0 Rally for Electoral Reforms. What follows is the full transcript of the interview.
Host: Joining us now on the phone is Malaysia's Information Minister Zainuddin Maidin. Many thanks for joining us. Those were very violent scenes that we saw earlier today. How can you justify the strength of your response to peaceful protest?
Malaysian Minister: There..there is a your inspectation(?) is a violent, its not violent. Your man..you're a reporter.. you're a journalist trying to project the exhibit more than what actually happen. That that that that's it. We are laughing at the the..eh I congratulate your journalist behaving like an actor. Very good actor.
Host: As you say that Sir, we are watching scenes of protesters being sprayed by chemical-filled water..(cut off)
Malaysian Minister: Yea I am watching, I am here. Its not at.. oh your you are always trying to do this is everywhere, but in Malaysia people are laugh at you, you know. We know our police at last our feelings(?) have have a..what.. allowed the procession to go to with Istana Negara, you know, though disperse police might be handle them with a tear gas.. police don't don't fire anybody..(cut off)
Host: Our correspondent came back into our office Sir, with chemicals in his eyes..(cut off)
Malaysian Minister: Either way...(not clear).. you are trying to project, what is your mind, you think that we Pakistan, we are Burma, we are Myanmar, and like that okay you are thinking...(cut off)
Host: Well unfortunately, when you refuse to let people protest, it disappear, Sir.
Malaysian Minister: We are different! We are totally different. Yea we are not..we are not like you. Act like a prick. You have a early perception. You come here, you want to project us like undemocratic country. This is democratic country, right?
Host: Sir why can't people protest then, if it's a democratic country?
Malaysian Minister: Here people protest..people don't..First they protest, we are allowing protest, and they have demonstrated. But we just trying to disperse them, and then later they don't want disperse, but later our police compromise. That has compromise and allowed them to go to Istana Negara. Police..our police has succeeded in handling them gently, right? Why don't you report that? And you take the opposition, someone from opposition party, you ask him to speak. You don't take from the government right?
Host: Why did you not break up these protesters peacefully?
Malaysian Minister: Pardon, pardon?! Pardon. I can't hear you. I can't hear you.
Host: Why did you not break up these protest more peacefully?
Malaysian Minister: No we we are..we..disperse(?) is illegal. We the one to..normally..
(cut off)Host: Okay so let me return to my former question. Why is a protest illegal. Why?
Malaysian Minister: Yea its illegal protest because we have the election in Malaysia. Its no no point of having a protest, we are allowing..we have every election every five years, never fail. We're not unlike Myanmar, not like other country. And you are helping this..you AlJazeera also is helping this this forces..you know..this forces who are not impression(?), who don't believe in democracy..right? yea you AlJazeera..this is AlJazeera altitude, right? (cut off)
